Governor Walz signs Elder Abuse legislation

June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, designed to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. Here in Minnesota, we recently made significant strides toward ending elder abuse when Governor Walz signed the elder abuse legislation into law. This bill creates long overdue protections for Minnesota’s aging population living in assisted-living centers. Before this law, Minnesota had been the only state in the nation that did not regulate the centers that more than 55,000 seniors call home.
