It's Older Americans Month, and You Can Help
Volunteering to help an elder balance a checkbook, complete yard work or go grocery shopping may seem like a simple task – but it can make a world of difference to an elderly person in need.

May is Older Americans Month. Catholic Charities offers two programs to help older adults remain living as independently as possible in their communities.

Senior Care Management
Senior Care Management provides in-home intensive care management to elderly people in Hennepin and Ramsey counties who have few resources. The program seeks to enhance the quality of life for low-income older adults, preserve their dignity and support their autonomy.

In 2007, more than 500 elderly adults were served by the Senior Care Management program, and many were able to remain in their own homes with the support of Catholic Charities’ staff and volunteers.

Caregiver Support
The Caregiver Support program provides respite services to caregivers who are responsible for the care of a frail and/or disabled elderly person. Volunteers befriend the homebound individual, visiting once a week to allow the caregiver to complete errands outside of the home.

Vital Volunteers
Both programs rely heavily on the support of volunteers who have time to share with elder Americans. What may seem like simple tasks have the potential to make a world of difference to an older person's independence. To learn more about volunteering with the elderly, visit Volunteer Resources, call the Volunteer Resources department at 612-664-8600 or e-mail volunteer@ccspm.org.
