Higher Ground Celebrates One Year of Creating Strong Foundations and Hope
"Everything begins with a home".
Enter Higher Ground, where all residents have access to supportive services such as housing and job search assistance, medical care and case coordination. This innovative approach to housing and shelter is revolutionary: individuals can move from emergency shelter to permanent housing, by simply walking up a flight of steps.
Housing is the critical foundation that people need to have underneath them in order to make any other positive changes in their lives. Year one of Catholic Charities' Higher Ground has helped pave pathways out of poverty for many individuals who have passed through its doors in the hope of a better tomorrow.
The first floor has 171 bunks to provide emergency shelter for men. The second floor has 80 Pay-for-Stay beds, residents pay $7 per night for a guaranteed bunk and locker. Floors three through six provide 74 single room occupancy and the top floor has 11 efficiency units, each with its own kitchen and bath.
- Since July 1, 2012 more than 95 men have moved from the Higher Ground crisis or temporary shelter into stable or permanent housing.
- Catholic Charities has seen a 38% decrease in bed nights for the top shelter users. These individuals have found permanent homes in the single room occupancy units freeing up emergency shelter space for men in crisis.
