at Catholic Charities' Food Shelves
Girl Scout Troop 259 has been hard at work at Catholic Charities Branch I food shelf. The Scouts, working toward their Gold Award, created a play area at the food shelf for children to enjoy while their parents use the food shelf.
Colorful beanbags, coloring books, children’s books and wall pictures all came together to create an inviting place for children to enjoy while their parents go through the intake process at the food shelf. The Scouts volunteered their time and the supplies.
And it didn’t take long for the Scouts to see just how helpful their service project would be. As they were setting up the play area, they had their first young child visit. The child got out a coloring book and crayons and sat at the table to color while the Scouts worked around her.
This is one of three locations where the Scouts have set up play areas as they work toward their Gold Award Project, the highest award achieved in Girl Scouts. Children account for 50% of those served at Branch I food shelf, making the project especially needed.
